Indian Ceramics Trienniale 2027 - Open Call
Applications close 15th May 2026
National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai
Theme: At Play
What forces are at play, shaping and defining the world we experience? What impulses do we contain that form or override these forces?
Play is integral to the human experience and fundamental to the creative process. There is a tension inherent in play that is exhilarating yet risky, competitive yet collaborative. Through play we can put down the weight of a loaded past, imagine radical futures, and yet remain truly present. Play provides not only refuge, but resistance.
Play allows us a sense of joy, moving lightly between structure and chaos without fear of failure. It exists at the threshold of uncertainty - where systems can be questioned, patterns broken, conventions overturned. Play offers us the freedom to pivot, adapt and shape-shift, opening up space for thinking otherwise—about material, making, and consequently about the world we are part of.
In this third edition of the Indian Ceramics Triennale, the exhibition is seen as an incubator of possibilities. Artists are invited to hold this undefined and unknown moment filled with potential, to dare to play through inventiveness, provocation, humour, satire, meaning, absurdity, performance and color. To use play as an institution of and for disruption, dreaming into existence the unexpected and unacknowledged. To question, through play, the forces at play.
Two Zoom information sessions will be organised on APRIL 2 AND APRIL 11 AT 6 PM IST to guide applicants through the process. Follow the link.

2026 ITAMI International Craft Exhibition
Applications close Friday 24th July 2026
Theme: ‘Shuki Shuhaidai’-Sake ware
The application guideline for 2026 ITAMI International Craft Exhibition is now available. Please note there are separate guidelines for those living inside and outside of Japan.
Shuki (Sake vessel) – vessels that enrich the pleasure of sharing a toast with Japanese sake.
Shuhaidai (Sake Cup Stands) – creations that enhance and enliven the atmosphere of a sake gathering. It does not simply refer to stands alone; they encompass anything that adorns, wraps, or carries - indeed, anything that enhances and colors the sake setting. As a theme, they invite broader expression and open the door to new interpretations.
In this competition, they are seeking works that are truly suited to drinking Japanese sake - not wine or whisky, but Sake.
In Japan, where there has long been a tradition of sharing cups of sake on a wide variety of occasions, thoughtfully designed sake ware has developed over time. Japanese sake can be served in many different ways - atsukan (warm), hiya (room temperature), or reishu (chilled) - and its flavor changes significantly depending on the temperature. Accordingly, vessels appropriate to each style of serving are essential.
Shuki and Shuhaidai may be made from any material, including ceramics, metal, glass, wood, lacquer, or textile. The distinctive qualities of each material can transform the atmosphere of a gathering.
While Japanese sake is deeply rooted in tradition, proposals for new styles are most welcome. You are invited to imagine the pleasures and settings of drinking sake, and to propose new scenes of conviviality for people living in contemporary society.
The exhibition will run from Saturday 14th November to Sunday 20th December 2026. Application fees apply.

This is an uparalleled opportunity to gain an insight into the crafts of Vietnam and to meet people who share your passion and skills
Hanoi itself is home to over 1,000 craft villages – silk, bamboo, ceramics, wood carving, shell carving – the list goes on
Visiting artists may be taken on tours of these villages and given an insight into centuries of traditional practices
Visiting artisans will be provided with a booth to show their work and volunteer translators to assist navigating the Vietnamese language
The opportunity to meet up to 300 artisans from around the world; see what they create; make new friends; plan new ventures – your imagination is the only limitation.
We’ve attached a link here to a short interview with Delvene Cockatoo Collins from Stradbroke Island who participated in the 2025 Festival.
The Global Crafts Festival 2026 is built upon seven core activities, each designed to celebrate, preserve, and propel the world's artisanal heritage into the future. From high-level trade exhibitions and prestigious awards to immersive masterclasses and heritage tours, the diverse programming creates a holistic ecosystem for artisans, designers, and cultural enthusiasts alike.

Surface Design Journal Spring Issue - Call for Proposals
Applications close 12th January 2026
SPRING ISSUE: Traditions & Techniques in Lace
Going to print early May.
Scholars generally agree that lace, as we know it today, first took shape in the early sixteenth century. From the beginning, it carried the aura of luxury — fragile, precious and born of painstaking hours. Once the purview of the needle and bobbin, now whether knitted or crocheted, its material language has expanded to include rope, wire and even reclaimed plastics. No longer confined to ornament, lace has become a site of exploration: artists stretch its once-delicate architecture into sweeping, monumental forms or tease out new meanings through the interplay of positive and negative space. This issue celebrates both the history of lace and the ever-growing possibilities for contemporary application.
Proposal Requirements include:
Abstract: 500 words max, Word document
4-6 representative images, jpg, tiff, or png format
Completed submission form
All submissions must be original, and exclusive to Surface Design Journal.
